
CJI Bobde writes to Centre seeking info on elevation of gay lawyer as HC judge

Chief Justice of India SA Bobde has written to the Centre, asking it to send information on its stand on advocate Saurabh Kirpal so that a final decision can be taken on his elevation as a Delhi High Court judge.
The Chief Justice of India has written to the Centre, seeking information on its stand on senior advocate Saurabh Kirpal’s elevation as a judge of the Delhi High Court. Saurabh Kirpal’s name was recommended for elevation in 2017. In a letter to Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, CJI SA Bobde sought additional inputs on Saurabh Kirpal so that a final decision could be taken soon on his elevation, sources said.
As per the Bill, those involved in unlawful conversions on the pretext of marriage will be punished with imprisonment of seven years and shall also be liable for a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Violations in respect of a minor, a person of unsound mind, a woman or a person belonging to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe will be punished with imprisonment of seven years and a fine of Rs 5 lakh.
