Chennai YouTuber arrested for embezzling funds under guise of renovating sub-temples

A Chennai-based YouTuber and social media influencer was arrested by Tamil Nadu police for raising funds under the pretext of renovating sub-temples. After he had received the funds, he used them for his personal purposes.
Karthik Gopinath, a YouTuber and social media influencer who runs a channel titled ‘Ilaya Bharatham’ was arrested by the Tamil Nadu Police on Monday morning.
Central Crime Branch (CCB) Avadi Police arrested Karthik Gopinath based on a complaint by Aravindan.
A statement by the police said that, “Based on a complaint by T Aravindan, Executive Officer, Arulmigu Madhura Kaliamman Thirukoil in Perambalur, Karthik Gopinath had opened a YouTube channel in the name of “Ilaya Bharatham” and asked public to give money in Milaap, website for fundraising under the pretext of renovatning the statues of sub temples of Arulmigu Madhura Kaliyamma temple."
"However, he had organised this without getting any permission from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department,” said the complaint.
The complainant had also stated that Karthik Gopinath had wrongfully used this amount for his personal purposes. Based on this and the complaint filed by Aravindan, the CCB filed a case under sections 406, 420 of the IPC and arrested him.
Further investigation is underway.
