Centre's push ahead of Gujarat polls: Flights from Rajkot int'l airport by September
India Today
The Rajkot international airport will reduce travel time and cost for residents of the Saurashtra and Kutch regions taking a flight abroad.
In a big development push by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the Gujarat Assembly elections later this year, the Rajkot International Airport will likely be functional by September.
Gujarat’s Saurashtra region, with 12 districts, and the neighbouring Kutch district don't have an international airport and the international airport for Saurashtra will benefit the business community in the region.
The people of Saurashtra now have to travel to Ahmedabad for all foreign travel. It increases the travel cost and time.
It takes around nine hours to reach Ahmedabad airport from Saurashtra, which has several manufacturing units. Many from Saurashtra are based in foreign countries and they frequently travel to the region.
For the past many years, there has been a demand to build an international airport in Rajkot. The existing airport is within the city limits and does not have any space to expand.
