
Can't throw away responsibility: Ex-mayor of Kabul continues to run city under Taliban

Daoud Sultanzoy, who was the mayor of Kabul under the Ashraf Ghani government, continues to run the capital city under the Taliban rule. He now shares his office with Hamidullah Nomani, the Taliban’s new caretaker administrator of Kabul.
A month has passed since the Taliban took over Kabul on August 15 following a lightning military campaign. Nearly all members of the erstwhile US-backed government have either left the country or relinquished their posts in fear of the militants. However, Daoud Sultanzoy, the 66-year-old ex-mayor of Kabul, continues to return to his office.
Daoud Sultanzoy, a former US citizen, now shares his office with Hamidullah Nomani, the Taliban’s new caretaker administrator of Kabul. Nomani served as the Afghan capital’s mayor and a cabinet minister in the first Taliban regime.

Legal immigration to the US in 2025 has seen one of its sharpest declines since the pandemic. About 2,50,000 fewer visas in total were issued compared to 2024, reported The Washington Post. The drop has been global, but India stands out as one of the worst affected, alongside China. Visa approvals for the two countries fell by a combined 84,000.

Oil and gas refineries and hubs are up in flames not just in the Middle East, but also in Russia and the US. Crude oil prices have surged over $100 a barrel.
