₹490-crore project approved to resolve Hanur's water crisis, ensuring long-term drinking water security and irrigation for 12,000 acres.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday announced a ₹490-crore Uduthorehalla project to lift water from the Cauvery River and fill reservoirs, tanks, and check dams to address the long-standing drinking water crisis in Hanur taluk of Chamarajanagar district. The project also irrigates 12,000 acres of the command area.
The proposal for the project had been submitted by Sunil Bose, Chamarajanagar MP, for inclusion in the 2026-27 State Budget. He had earlier expressed confidence that the project would receive the government’s approval.
According to the project, water will be drawn from the Cauvery near Saragur village in Kollegal taluk and pumped to the Uduthorehalla reservoir in Hanur taluk. From there, the water will be distributed to tanks, lakes and check dams in Kurattihosuru, Santekane and surrounding areas in the taluk.
According to the MP, the project is expected to provide long-term drinking water security to villages under nine gram panchayats in the region, which have been facing recurring water shortages.
