Three-year-old ‘Bond’ attached to the Narcotic Intelligence Bureau CID, Tiruchi, trained in detecting narcotic and psychotropic substances, showcased its exemplary skills to emerge on top in the ‘Narcotic’ event ‘ at the State Police Duty Meet -2024 held recently.
The five-day competition from December 9 to 13 organised at the Tamil Nadu Police Academy in Onnamancherry, Chennai, was meant for detective dogs maintained by the police in the districts and in different units. The competition saw the participation of detective dogs trained in crime detection, explosive substances detection, and narcotic substances detection.
Belonging to the Labrador breed, ‘Bond’ participated in the ‘Narcotic’ event and showcased its exemplary skills in detecting narcotic substances kept in a building, vehicle, and inside a baggage. Bond, a male dog, was inducted into service in February 2023 in Tiruchi after undergoing training for six months in detecting different types of narcotic substances at the Detective Dog Training Centre of the State Police in Coimbatore.
‘Bond’ is being taken care of by its trainers — special SI S. Ramesh and head constable P. Jayaprakash in a separate kennel within the sprawling Tiruchi City Police Armed Reserve premises at K.K. Nagar here. The ‘Narcotic’ event saw the participation of eight dogs trained in detecting narcotic substances and being maintained in different districts and units.
The contest for the detective dogs featured search of narcotic substances hidden in a building, concealed in a vehicle, ground search, human body search, and baggage search. There were points for each one of them besides points for obedience, said Special Sub Inspector Ramesh. ‘Bond’ scored the highest point and was ranked first in the narcotic event to bag the gold medal. The performance of the participating detective dogs was monitored by three judges. The gold medal would be presented to ‘Bond’ soon.
