Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis, said that the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation is being treated like a hen that lays golden eggs.
Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis, on Thursday alleged corruption in all the departments of Shiv Sena-led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Speaking on the Opposition’s last week’s proposal in the Legislative Assembly, Fadnavis targeted the Shiv Sena on various issues, including corruption in the BMC and the law and order situation prevailing in the state.
He said, "Those running for power in BMC regard the corporation as a hen that lays golden eggs. The richest municipal corporation in the country, as well as the eighth largest, ranks 45th in financial re-management. This is an example of poor management."
Alleging that corruption pervades every BMC scheme, Fadnavis said that a contract worth Rs 100 crore for five Jumbo Covid Centres in Mumbai was awarded to relatives of some of the office bearers.
Their firms were given names that were identical to the names of the nominated companies, and contracts were awarded on the same basis, he said.
"Dada [Ajit Pawar], the company you expelled from Pune in 15 days and whose Covid Centre contract had been cancelled, was awarded a contract for five Covid Centres in Mumbai. However, nothing was done," he added.
Fadanvis also criticised BMC's massive budget for penguins' upkeep. "Files are not moving in the administration, but the Mumbai Municipal Corporation is more interested in the penguins than the health of the people."
