Ayyanar sculpture from the later Chola period discovered in Arumbavur, highlighting historical significance and need for preservation.
A stone sculpture of Ayyanar, probably dating back to the later Chola period, has been found by a history enthusiast at Arumbavur village in Perambalur district.
The statue was found in a private agricultural land, adjoining Arumbavur Small Tank, by Mahatma Selvapandian. The sculpture stands about 68 cm in height and 51 cm in width
The Ayyanar depicted in a seated position in the ornate sculpture probably belonged to the later Chola period. The face and other parts of the sculpture had suffered erosion as it lay in the midst of wild growth in a barren field, said Mr. Selvapandian.
“An inscription belonging to the reign of Chola king Rajaraja III found in the Sivan Temple in Arumbavur refers to a donation of a piece of land to an Ayyan temple in the village. So an Ayyanar temple could have existed in the village and the sculpture could belong to that ruined temple. It is essential that the sculpture be protected from vagaries of nature,” he added.
