'Padugappana Mugavai' initiative installs 2,000 CCTVs in Ramnad district to enhance surveillance and prevent crime effectively.
As part of the ‘Padugappana Mugavai’ (Safe Ramnad) initiative and a broader CCTV installation drive undertaken in the Southern Zone, about 2,000 CCTVs has been installed in the district in four months starting from 2025.
The initiative to increase the surveillance infrastructure in village areas was taken as part of a crime detection and prevention measure, said Ramanathapuram Superintendent of Police G. Chandeesh.
He added that though the town areas were widely covered under CCTVs, the village and town areas in the interior part of the district still remained left out.
In the last two years, the 3,500 CCTVs in the district increased to 4,500, he noted.
But, noting the importance of surveillance in rural areas, especially in remote villages, sub-divisional officers, Station House Officers (SHO) and constables were proactively involved in engaging with the public, especially village heads, panchayat members, among others, he said.
Through the daily meetings were conducted by the police department, the villagers were educated about the need for CCTVs for their benefit in preventing crime and also to detect criminal offences registered in their respective villages, Mr. Chandeesh noted.
The constant interaction with them led to the instalment of 2,000 CCTVs in just four months in the year, he said.
