Bombay High Court on Wednesday rejected an anticipatory bail application filed by Deputy Registrar, Co-operative Societies of Mumbai who claimed that he had not been arrested while the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) said that he was. The case against the Deputy Registrar was that he and his subordinate demanded illegal gratification from a man who alleged irregularity in affairs of his housing co-operative society located in Khar area of Mumbai. The man had alleged that the managing committee of the housing society was not conducting meetings and neither any audit was conducted. Hence, he lodged complaint with the Deputy Registrar, Co-operative Societies on 12 September, 2020, but got to know that the officer Gautam Vardhan was demanding bribe of Rs 3 lakhs.
As per the Bill, those involved in unlawful conversions on the pretext of marriage will be punished with imprisonment of seven years and shall also be liable for a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Violations in respect of a minor, a person of unsound mind, a woman or a person belonging to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe will be punished with imprisonment of seven years and a fine of Rs 5 lakh.
