Apple brings AI agents into Xcode, letting developers hand over real coding tasks to machines

Apple has rolled out AI-powered coding agents in Xcode, allowing developers to let artificial intelligence actively build, test and fix apps instead of just suggesting code.
Apple is taking a big step deeper into AI-powered software development. The company has announced that it is adding agentic coding features to Xcode, its flagship tool used to build almost every iPhone app. With this move, Apple is backing one of Silicon Valley’s fastest-growing ideas, letting AI not just assist developers, but actually take action and write code on their behalf.
In a demo video released on Tuesday, Apple explained how Xcode will now work alongside AI coding agents to handle complex tasks that usually require several manual steps. “Xcode and coding agents can now work together to handle complex multi-step tasks on your behalf,” an Apple representative said during the presentation. The update allows developers to rely on AI agents to build projects, test apps, search Apple’s documentation and even fix bugs.
The new capabilities arrive with Xcode 26.3, which is now available in beta for registered Apple developers. A wider release on the App Store is expected soon. Apple is integrating AI-powered coding agents from OpenAI and Anthropic directly into Xcode, supporting OpenAI’s Codex and Anthropic’s Claude Agent. Developers will need to connect their own OpenAI or Anthropic accounts using an API key to start using these tools.
Until now, Xcode already offered support for ChatGPT and Claude, added during the summer. But that earlier integration was limited to assistance, such as answering questions or suggesting code. With agentic coding, the AI can now take action inside Xcode itself, editing files, updating project settings, running tests and searching documentation without constant human input.
This approach has quickly gained popularity among programmers through what is often called “vibe coding.” Instead of writing every line by hand, developers describe what they want, let AI generate the code, and then review or tweak the result. Many developers see this as a faster way to build software, especially for repetitive or time-consuming tasks.
Apple’s push into agentic coding comes at an interesting time for the company’s broader AI strategy. Its consumer-facing AI platform, Apple Intelligence, has seen delays and internal changes. However, AI tools for developers appear to be moving faster, with strong interest from iPhone and Mac app creators over the past few months.
