Andhra Pradesh Minister announces waste-to-energy initiatives, aiming for dump yard-free urban areas by 2025, emphasizing clean energy production.
Andhra Pradesh is set to ramp up its waste-to-energy initiatives, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development Ponguru Narayana said during his visit to the solid waste management plant at Kondaveedu, Chilakaluripet constituency in Palnadu district on Tuesday (December 09) .
The plant, operated by Jindal Group, converts municipal solid waste into electricity and produces bricks from the ash. On this occasion, the Minister also announced that the State government has been striving to ensure dump yards free urban areas by October 2025, as per the instructions of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu.
The Minister, accompanied by local MLA P. Pulla Rao, Swachh Andhra Corporation Chairman K. Pattabhiram and Guntur Municipal Corporation Commissioner Puli Sreenivasulu reviewed the plant’s operations, which handle 1,200 tonnes of waste daily from three municipal corporations and six municipalities. Highlighting the plant’s efficiency, Mr. Narayana emphasized that sustainable waste management can significantly contribute to clean energy production.
Drawing on his experience from 2014-19, Mr. Narayana said: “I studied solid waste management in countries like Singapore and Japan, where advanced systems are operational. Singapore has four such plants, and Tokyo has 49. Inspired by these models, we planned 13 waste-to-energy plants in Andhra Pradesh. Unfortunately, the previous YSRCP government abandoned most of these projects.”
Mr. Narayana confirmed plans to establish new plants in Nellore-Gudur and Kakinada-Rajahmundry corridors, as well as another between Kadapa, Kurnool, and Anantapur. These projects aim to manage the 6,890 tonnes of municipal waste generated daily across the State.
The Kondaveedu and Visakhapatnam plants currently process 2,169 tonnes of waste daily, showcasing the potential for scaling such facilities. “The waste not only generates electricity but also produces bricks, demonstrating a sustainable model for managing municipal waste,” Mr. Narayana added.
The Minister criticized the previous administration for its lack of vision and commitment to implementing such transformative projects, reiterating his focus on creating a cleaner and greener Andhra Pradesh.
