Ancient ‘Vanni’ tree at Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple tilts; steps on to restore it
The ancient ‘Vanni’ tree on Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple premises has fallen during the recent rain which lashed the district.
At Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, the ancient ‘Vanni’ tree, one of the sacred temple trees (Thala Viruksham), and the Vinayagar shrine located beneath it are of great significance, devotees said.
Near the ‘Vanni’ tree, the temple administration has set up a prasadam kitchen (madapalli) to prepare food like tamarind rice, pongal, and other items.
It was said that the smoke and heat rising from the stove scorched the leaves and damaged the tree over the period of time.
Hindu Makkal Katchi district president M. Solaikannan condemning the negligence of the temple administration, through a statement, said they submitted a complaint two years ago suggesting that the kitchen be moved to another location to protect the tree.
He demanded that at least from now on, the prasadam preparation kitchen that caused damage to the tree must be set up in an alternative location.
