Amazon is reportedly planning to cut as many as 16,000 jobs soon, across its different teams and regions. Now, a leaked email indicates that the tech giant may have prematurely sent an invite to some of its employees for a potential layoff announcement.
Amazon is reportedly planning for another round of layoffs soon. The tech giant is tipped to cut as many as 16,000 jobs across various departments and regions. Now, a leaked email has hinted that the company may have prematurely sent invites to some of its employees for the said-layoff announcement. Here are all the details.
On Tuesday, some employees at Amazon Web Services (AWS) received an email titled, “Send Project Dawn email.” The email also had a calendar invite for all recipients for an event. However, the email may have been sent prematurely, and the event was cancelled shortly afterwards.
Amazon laid off 14,000 employees in October last year, as part of a broader plan to cut 30,000 jobs. The second phase is reported to take place as early as January 28 in the US. Teams in other regions, including India, may be impacted.
According to Business Insider, the email was written by Colleen Aubrey, a senior vice president at AWS Solutions. Though it may have been sent by her assistant. The event was scheduled for 5 am. Pacific time (6:30 pm IST) on Wednesday, January 28. However, the event was cancelled shortly after some employees received this message.
In the message, Colleen Aubrey explained that the changes were part of Amazon’s long-term vision of bringing more flexibility. She stated, "This is a continuation of the work we've been doing for more than a year to strengthen the company by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy, so that we can move faster for customers.”
Though the report does not state that Aubrey specifically mentions layoffs in the message, it is believed that Amazon was going to make some sort of announcement regarding the same. It seems that the layoffs would’ve impacted AWS employees based in the US, Canada and Costa Rica. In the email, Aubrey stated that the ‘impacted colleagues’ in these regions had been notified.
