Airtel launches AI-powered fraud alert system to crack down on OTP related banking scams
India Today
Airtel has rolled out an AI-powered fraud alert system for users. The effort is detecting OPT-related banking fraud. Here's what we know so far.
Often, we hear about digital fraud, and the news never fails to shock us. To combat the growing menace, Bharti Airtel has rolled out a new AI-backed fraud alert system. Airtel's new feature is developed to protect users from OTP (one-time password)-related banking fraud in real time. The solution is currently available in Haryana, and Airtel says it will be rolled out to customers nationwide over the next two weeks.
Fraudsters often pose as agents; this agent could be a delivery person, a customer support executive, or any service representative. These fake agents manipulate customers and pressure them into sharing OTPs that are linked to banking transactions. And once an OTP is disclosed, the customer’s bank account can be compromised.
Airtel’s new AI-backed system is designed to detect suspicious activity and instantly alert customers while they are on a call. How?
When a bank OTP is detected during a potentially risky incoming call, Airtel immediately issues a fraud alert. The alert warns customers that sharing OTPs for banking transactions during the call could be dangerous.
By combining AI intelligence with real-time alerts, the system gives customers a chance to pause, evaluate the situation, and avoid falling victim to scams, addressing a security gap frequently exploited by fraudsters.
Over the past two years, Airtel has rolled out several AI-driven security measures, including spam call alerts and malicious link blocking, aimed at preventing fraud at an early stage.
