AIADMK councillors walk out of Coimbatore Corporation meeting over resolutions passed without discussion, raising concerns about governance.
AIADMK councillors staged a walkout during the Coimbatore Corporation’s urgent council meeting on March 06, 2026 (Friday), over the passing of resolutions without discussion.
Soon after the meeting began, councillors R. Prabhakaran and D. Ramesh objected to the manner in which the resolutions were taken up and said the items listed on the agenda were being passed by Mayor K. Ranganayaki without discussion in the council. They sought time for councillors to speak on the resolutions.
The AIADMK councillors later walked out of the council hall.
The meeting continued with the remaining councillors and the 67 resolutions placed before the council were approved.
After the approval of the resolutions, councillors were allowed to raise issues. V.B. Mubaseera, Chairperson of the Taxation and Finance Committee, said subjects had not been placed before the committee prior to the council meeting.
Ward 98 councillor R. Udhayakumar raised concern over the issuance of underground drainage (UGD) connection books. He said that though the charges were not mandatory, some residents were shown amounts of around ₹30,000 even in areas where UGD works had not been completed. He urged the Corporation to either stop issuing the books or complete the works soon.
