
Ahead of UP panchayat polls, villagers and town dwellers in Muzaffarnagar divided over farmers' agitation

Ahead of the district panchayat presidential elections, most villages in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar have lent their support to the farmers' agitation and are willing to dethrone the BJP. On the other hand, the town population believes the agitation will have a minimal effect on the voting patterns in urban areas.
Muzaffarnagar, which is the epicenter of the ongoing farmers' agitation in Uttar Pradesh, is bracing up for the upcoming district panchayat presidential elections. Despite the seemingly overwhelming support to the farmers' unions and the undercurrent against the BJP government in western UP, especially in villages, the town dwellers seem unfazed by the agitation. While most of the Jat dominant villages support the farmers' agitation, led by Bharatiya Kisan Union’s (Arajnaitik) Rakesh Tikait in western Uttar Pradesh, and willing to dethrone the BJP legislators, a majority of town dwellers think differently.
Amid preparations for an engagement and haldi ceremony in Maharashtra's Dhule district, an argument broke out between two groups over the printing of names on a wedding invitation card, during which three people were attacked with sharp weapons and killed. Three others were injured and are undergoing treatment.
