After thumping victory in Punjab, resurgent AAP tries to strengthen base in Rajasthan

The resounding win in the recently concluded Punjab election seems to have enthused the Aam Aadmi Party for spreading its wings to more states. The AAP is now hoping to pose a serious challenge to the Congress and the BJP in Rajasthan that will go to polls in 2023.

A resurgent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), buoyed by its huge success in the recently held Punjab Assembly elections, has been trying to gain ground in Rajasthan as well.

Rajasthan, which will go for elections in 2023, has been witnessing primarily a bipolar contest, resulting in the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party ruling the state alternatively for two decades. Traditionally, the state has always voted for either the Congress or the BJP (the Bhairon Singh Shekhawat-led Janata Party was in power for around two and half years between 1977 and 1980).

"The Aam Aadmi Party can provide a credible alternative in Rajasthan as it did in Punjab. The issues in Rajasthan are similar to those in Punjab,” state secretary of Aam Aadmi Party Devendra Shastri told India Today.

“Expensive electricity has been plaguing Rajasthan as well. The Aam Aadmi Party provided solutions to the electricity-related problems in Delhi and Punjab and can do the same in Rajasthan as well," Devendra Shastri added.

Enthused by the Punjab election results, the AAP cadre in Rajasthan feels that it can provide a credible alternative to the people of Rajasthan, who have had very few options to choose from when it came to casting their votes.
