AC dispute given racial twist: Accused's lawyer after Arunachal woman harassed
India Today
The lawyer for the accused, Harsh and Ruby Jain, dismissed the allegations and told India Today that although his client made certain remarks in anger, which were wrong and regrettable, the issue was not one of racial discrimination but rather a dispute between two neighbours.
A dispute over the installation of an air conditioner in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area has escalated into a racial row, after a UPSC aspirant from Arunachal Pradesh alleged that her neighbours, Harsh and Ruby Jain, made racist remarks against her. The accused’s lawyer, however, has downplayed the episode, calling it a neighbourly quarrel being presented in a one-sided and exaggerated manner.
Following her complaint, a case has been registered at the Malviya Nagar police station, with the woman alleging that the altercation over the air conditioner led to racially charged comments by the couple.
What began as a minor disagreement over dust from an air conditioner has since taken a racial turn, with the woman and her two roommates accusing their neighbours of targeting their ethnicity and calling them “sex workers.”
The women who claim to be victims have filed a complaint with the police, following which a case has been registered against the accused couple under relevant sections and an investigation has been initiated.
However, Gaurav, the lawyer for the accused Harsh and Ruby Jain, dismissed the allegations and told India Today that although his client made certain remarks in anger, which were wrong and regrettable, the issue was not one of racial discrimination but rather a dispute between two neighbours.
"It is not a case of racial discrimination, but a dispute between two neighbours. Our client used inappropriate language in anger and regrets it," the accused's counsel told India Today.
