Cholera outbreak: At least eight people have died and several have been infected by the water-borne disease in the tribal belt of Kashipur block in Odisha's Rayagada district.
Eight people have died of cholera and several have been infected by the water-borne disease in Kashipur block in Odisha's Rayagada district. Out of 8 panchayats in Kashipur, six have reported Cholera cases.
The death toll has gone up eight, while 120 people are hospitalised. Around 65 people are affected by the water-borne disease in Dudukabahal panchayat, while 48 have been infected in Tikiri Panchayat.
A 60-year-old woman named Dalmi Majhi of Sanamatikana village in Nakatiguda panchayat recently died after suffering from Cholera. On Monday night, she complained about having stomach aches and loose motions. Family members rushed her to the hospital but was declared brought dead.
Rayagada district Collector Swadha Dev Singh and Dr Bibhuti Bhushan Pal, head of a team of doctors from the Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) in Bhubaneswar, reached the village to analyse the situation.
They tested around ten samples and found Vibrio Cholerae bacteria in three samples. The bacteria have also been found in the water samples collected from the Kashipur block.
Following the visit, the officials commenced the treatment protocol and two temporary medical camps were set up in Mandipisi and Dangalisi villages in Kashipur.
Talking to India Today, Rayagada Collector Swadha Dev Singh said "Yesterday we had about 104 active cases who were still under treatment. We have decentralised Public Health Centres (PHC), and admissions of patients are happening in two PhCs now. Similarly, treatment is already continuing in Community Health Centres (CHC). The medical service has been divided into four sections for treating patients. Including, three mobile health units have been deployed in Guguput, Dengagud and Ramaguda villages."
