The 76th memorial day for Salem Prison martyrs honored 22 political prisoners with tributes and calls for a memorial's construction.
The 76th memorial day of the Salem Prison martyrs was observed in Salem on Wednesday (February 11, 2026), with members of the Salem Historical Society and the Communist Party of India (CPI) paying floral tributes to the 22 political prisoners who were killed inside Salem Central Prison on February 11, 1950.
According to speakers, 19 of those killed were from Kerala, two from Tamil Nadu and one from Andhra Pradesh. They were members of the then banned CPI. Seventeen prisoners died in the firing, while five others succumbed to injuries sustained during police action.
Society executive president Tharai A. Kumaravel, general secretary J. Barnabas, joint secretary S.V. Govindaraju and former CPI(M) MLA K. Balabharathi participated in the observance.
Speakers recalled the incident and paid homage to the martyrs, highlighting their sacrifice. They also urged the government to expedite the construction of a memorial for the martyrs, which was announced last year.
