Over 70 per cent of the newly sworn-in ministers in Bihar have declared criminal cases against them, as per a report by the poll rights body.

Over 70 per cent of the newly sworn-in ministers in Bihar have declared criminal cases against them, according to a report by the poll rights body, Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

After the recent political transition in Bihar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) escalated attacks on Nitish Kumar's new government in alliance with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led Mahagathbandhan (MGB). The recent controversy was triggered over the new law minister, who was to be present before the court on the day of his swearing-in ceremony as a cabinet minister.

The law minister of Bihar, Rashtriya Janata Dal’s (RJD) Kartikeya Singh, was to surrender in Danapur court on August 16 in a kidnapping case but instead, he showed up at the Patna Raj Bhawan to take oath as the new minister in the Nitish Kumar-led government in Bihar. Earlier on August 12, RJD leader Kartikeya Singh was granted interim protection till September 1 by the court. The BJP said there are many tainted leaders in Nitish Kumar's new cabinet.

Close sources from the law minister said that he received a relief order from the court of no coercive action till September 1.

India Today did a fact check on the claim by studying the reports issued by the election watchdog association for democratic reforms.

As per the ADR report, released after August 16, 32 out of 33 ministers sworn-in in the Bihar cabinet were analysed. 27 (72 per cent) of the total strength of the Bihar cabinet have declared criminal cases against themselves.
