117 retired judges, officials issue open statement to back Nupur Sharma, say SC judges crossed the line | Key points

117 signatories, including retired judges, armed forces officers and bureaucrats, have issued an open statement to back Nupur Sharma, saying SC judges crossed the Laxman Rekha.

Following the Supreme Court’s observations against suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, 117 people, including retired judges, armed forces officers and bureaucrats, have issued an open statement backing Nupur Sharma and saying the SC judges crossed the Laxman Rekha.

The vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and J B Pardiwala on Friday came down heavily on Nupur Sharma, who had allegedly made remarks against Prophet Mohammad in a televised debate. The judges said she has a loose tongue and is single-handedly responsible for what’s happening in the country and should apologise to the nation.

The open statement was signed by a total of 117 signatories comprising 15 retired judges, 77 retired bureaucrats and 25 retired armed forces officers.

The statement read, “We, as Concerned Citizens, do believe that the democracy of any country will remain intact till all the institutions perform their duties as per the constitution. Recent comments by the two judges of the Hon’ble Supreme Court have surpassed the Laxman Rekha and compelled us to issue an open statement.”

1) Unfortunate and unprecedented comments emanating from the two Judge Bench of the Hon’ble Supreme Court while being seized of a petition by Nupur Sharma, have sent shockwaves in the country and outside. The observations, simultaneously relayed by all news channels in high decibel, are not in sync with the judicial ethos.

2) Nupur Sharma sought access to the justice system before the highest court as that court alone could consider grant of relief being sought. She was defacto denied access to the judiciary and in the process, there was an outrage on the Preamble, spirit and essence of the Constitution of India.
