Officials swept the Varanasi court complex after the threat message to the advocate Shrinath Tripathi. However, no explosives were found and judicial proceedings continued under heightened police surveillance.
Security was stepped up at the Varanasi court complex after senior advocate Shrinath Tripathi, who is representing Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati in a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) case against him, received a bomb threat on his mobile phone, officials said on Thursday.
According to the police, the message warned, "Banaras kachehri ko hum bomb se uda denge aur tumhe bhi (We will blow up Varanasi court and you too)".
The threat triggered immediate concern within the police commissionerate limits of Cantt police station, where Tripathi practices. He is a senior advocate and a member of the Bar Council of India.
Taking the matter seriously, the City Magistrate, ACP Cantt and Inspector Cantt reached the spot and held discussions with the lawyer. Tripathi said he has submitted a formal representation to the district judge in Varanasi regarding the threat.
Officials assured that necessary legal action would be taken based on the complaint.
As a precautionary measure, bomb disposal and dog squads carried out an intensive search of the entire court premises. No suspicious object was found during the sweep. Judicial work at the court complex is continuing normally, though police said heightened surveillance remains in place and law and order is under close watch.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.

India's original Dhurandhar, Ravindra Kaushik, rose from acting at college theatres, to infiltrating the Pakistan Army as a RAW Agent. He provided critical intelligence on Pakistani troop movements and the country's nuclear programme, but died a lonely death after his betrayal and subsequent capture by the ISI.
