What India-EU trade deal means for Trump

India-EU FTA: A continent Donald Trump has mocked and pressured over his Greenland ambition, signing a trade deal with a country he has sought to corner with sky-high tariffs, will no doubt be a sore sight. Will this nudge Trump to secure a trade with India?
India and the European Union (EU) on Tuesday will announce the 'mother of all trade deals' that 'Daddy' Trump won't like. A continent Trump has mocked and pressured over his Greenland ambition, signing a trade deal with a country he has sought to corner with sky-high tariffs, will no doubt be a sore sight. The eccentric US President would likely see this as open defiance as the trade deal with India hangs fire, not for policy reasons, but just because Prime Minister Narendra Modi has refused to massage his ego. On the other hand, the EU has also halted the approval of its trade deal with the US.
The 'daddy' nickname given by the Nato chief last year has since gone on to become a shorthand for projecting Trump as a dominant authoritarian who likes to control opponents and allies alike.
That the India-EU trade deal has rattled 'Daddy' was evident on Monday as Trump aide and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accused Europe of indirectly funding the Russia-Ukraine war through energy trade routed via India.
"We have put 25% tariffs on India for buying Russian oil. Guess what happened last week? The Europeans signed a trade deal with India," Bessent told ABC News in an interview.
But little does Bessent know that Trump himself deserves some credit for the trade deal, which has been under negotiation for two decades. Without Trump's tariff threats and tendency to alienate allies, New Delhi and Brussels might not have found the push they needed to reach the agreement.
India has been slapped with 50% tariffs (25% reciprocal and 25% for Russian oil) amid rocky ties with the US. For much of last year, Trump and his aides engaged in rabid criticism of India, from dubbing it the "Kremlin's laundromat" to calling the Ukraine conflict "Modi's war". All this just to pressure India into signing a lop-sided trade deal in favour of the US.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.

India's original Dhurandhar, Ravindra Kaushik, rose from acting at college theatres, to infiltrating the Pakistan Army as a RAW Agent. He provided critical intelligence on Pakistani troop movements and the country's nuclear programme, but died a lonely death after his betrayal and subsequent capture by the ISI.
