Wes Moore Says Maryland Won't 'Sit On Our Hands' When It Comes To Redistricting

His statement comes as Democratic states try to combat Trump's redistricting push.
In a CBS interview on Sunday, Maryland Governor Wes Moore made clear the state could take an active role in the nationwide battle over redistricting championed by President Donald Trump.
“We’re not just going to sit on our hands because Donald Trump tells us to,” Moore said during an appearance on ‘Face the Nation.’ “That’s not the way this process is going to work.”
Moore’s statement comes after he announced the creation of a redistricting commission last week as Democratic states across the country have sought to respond to Republican efforts to redraw House districts in their favor. That commission will hold hearings and get constituent feedback about how the state’s districts are currently demarcated, Moore has said.
In states including Texas, Missouri and North Carolina, Republican-led legislatures have already approved plans to redistrict their House maps to the benefit of the GOP. As a result, Republicans could gain five House seats in Texas, one in Missouri and one in North Carolina.
California’s Democratic governor Gavin Newsom has also championed a ballot measure, Proposition 50, in a bid to counter Republicans’ gains. Under Prop 50, which passed with roughly 64 percent of the vote last week, California’s maps will be redrawn in a way that could net five more House districts that are favorable to Democrats in the state.
