A skier in Washington State was rescued after being partially buried by snow during a heightened avalanche risk in the central Cascades.
The rescue was filmed by Ian Deans, who helped the stranded man and told local news station KOMO that he hopes the situation serves as a warning that ski conditions can change in a heartbeat.
“So I started digging, but the snow kept sloughing back into the same hole,” Deans said. “I was just trying to break the resistance enough so I could pull him out. From the time he was buried to the time I got him out, I counted it — it was just over 30 seconds.”
The skier told Deans that he had been skiing through deep powder in The Summit at Snoqualmie when he fell headfirst into more than three feet of snow, according to KOMO. Deans said that only the skier's legs and part of his arm were visible while the rest of his body was under the snow.
“I just feel lucky to have been in the right place at the right time with the right skill set to help,” Deans said. “I hope anybody would do the same.”
