Loud boom heard across northeast Ohio likely caused by meteor
USA TODAY
A loud boom was heard in northeast Ohio on March 17. Officials say it was likely caused by a passing meteor.
A "loud boom" heard in northeast Ohio on Tuesday, March 17 was likely the result of a meteor, the National Weather Service said.
The agency's Pittsburgh office said a "fireball" was spotted in the sky across parts of western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio.
"Satellite imagery suggested this could have been a meteor entering Earth's atmosphere, as it appears the fireball was detected around the Cleveland area," the weather service said in a Facebook post.
A video captured by one of the weather service's employees shows the fireball entering the atmosphere with a blast heard in the background.
According to NASA, the fireball was seen around 8:57 a.m. ET.
