VIT Founder G. Viswanathan receives Doctor of Literature at St. Xavier's University convocation for educational and humanitarian contributions.
The Founder and Chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), G. Viswanathan, was conferred with the Doctor of Literature at the sixth convocation of St. Xavier’s University in Kolkata on Saturday. According to a press release, the honor was bestowed upon him by St. Xavier’s University in recognition of his outstanding contributions to education, leadership, public service, and humanitarian efforts. The convocation was presided over by James Arjen Tete, chancellor, St. Xavier’s University, in the presence of John Felix Raj, vice-chancellor of the university. Justice I. P. Mukherji, Chief Justice, High Court of Meghalaya, delivered the convocation address. The recognition marks the first time an Indian university has conferred an honorary doctorate upon him. Previously, the VIT chancellor was honored with an honorary doctorate by West Virginia University, USA, in 2009, and by the State University of New York, Binghamton University, USA, in 2024. Expressing gratitude for the honor, Mr. Viswanathan thanked St. Xavier’s University for conferring the honour on him and recollected his long association with Bengal. On the occasion, Sankar Viswanathan and Sekar Viswanathan, vice-presidents of VIT, were present, the release said.
