Venkatachalapathy Street in Chennai’s Aminjikarai in dire need of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure

Residents and commuters using Venkatachalapathy Street in Aminjikarai have raised concerns over the lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure on the busy stretch due to unregulated parking of four-wheelers encroaching on the road.

Branching off of Harrington Road, this narrow but vital road connects Chetpet with Metha Nagar and further, with Nelson Manickam Road and Choolaimedu. The street is densely populated and lined with medical shops, a community hall, and temples. The road witnesses a steady flow of both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, especially during peak hours on working days.

The absence of a dedicated pedestrian pathway is a major concern for residents, especially senior citizens and children. “There is no proper footpath,” says Rukmani, a senior citizen and regular temple-goer. “As cars are parked on both sides of the street, we are forced to walk on the road itself. At times, dustbins overflow and garbage spills onto the road, emanating a foul smell.”

K. Larsen, an autorickshaw driver who frequently uses the stretch, said: “This road is a preferred shortcut from Chetpet to Nelson Manickam Road. But it is often congested due to unregulated parking. Waste discarded on roadsides also attracts stray cattle, causing further trouble.”

S. Vinod, a college student who commutes daily through the street, echoed similar concerns. “Encroachments on both sides reduce the motorable and walking space. If they are cleared, pedestrians can walk freely without any hindrance.”

When contacted, an official from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) said: “The community hall on the street is currently being demolished and rebuilt. Once the reconstruction is complete, we can submit a proposal for pavements to the higher authorities, as the pedestrian movement in the area is expected to increase due to the hall.”

The official also added that steps have been taken to clear the garbage periodically. Some residents discard waste on roadsides continuously. Steps will be taken to improve the situation.
