Bus services are now operating from Terminal I at Ukkadam Bus Stand to aid Terminal II's construction in Coimbatore.
Buses connecting Ukkadam to places within and outside Coimbatore city have started using Terminal I that was developed under the Ukkadam Bus Stand redevelopment project.
The newly-constructed facility, which was inaugurated on March 13, was not put into operation immediately due to pending water connection works for the reverse osmosis plant and restrooms.
Construction of Terminal II, located near Sugam Bypass Road and estimated at around ₹8 crore, is in progress. Work at the site was held up as buses were operating from the location. Officials shifted bus services to the newly-constructed Terminal I to facilitate completion of works at Terminal II.
Terminal II would have a total built-up area of 2,156.06 sq. m., of which 556.38 sq. m. under the complex component is completed. The facility has provision for 30 bus bays.
Officials said driveway flooring works are in progress, following which roofing works will begin. Around 60% of the work on Terminal II has been completed, and the facility is targeted for completion within two months. Once ready, Terminal II will cater to mofussil bus services, while Terminal I will handle town buses.
Meanwhile, following recent rain, water stagnation was observed at the entrance on the Selvapuram–Perur Road side of Terminal I and at the exit towards the Ukkadam junction. Officials attributed the issue to blockage in the stormwater drain and said rectification works are in progress.
