Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss on Thursday (December 19, 2024) urged the State government to take immediate steps to expedite pending cases in the Supreme Court pertaining to the appointment of vice chancellors to State-run universities in Tamil Nadu.
In a statement, the PMK leader said the rift between the Tamil Nadu government and Governor R.N. Ravi is unwarranted at a time when the posts of vice chancellor in six State-run universities lie vacant. His comments came against the backdrop of a statement from Raj Bhavan on Wednesday (December 18, 2024), criticising a government order (G.O) issued to notify a search committee for identifying the new vice chancellor of Annamalai University. It said the G.O violated Supreme Court judgments.
Dr. Anbumani also expressed concerns over V-C posts lying vacant in six State-run universities for several months and said this resulted in administrative bottlenecks and affected the functioning of higher educational institutions.
Backing the position of the Tamil Nadu government on the matter, he said there is no provision or clause that mandates a nominee of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to be part of the search committee to identify a new vice chancellor for State-run universities in Tamil Nadu.
“The Governor only has the authority to appoint any one of the three persons nominated by the search committee as vice chancellor and has no authority to appoint the search committee itself,” Dr. Anbumani added.
