UP's Amethi set to make AK203 Kalashnikov assault rifles as India-Russia ink pact
India Today
India and Russia have signed a deal for the manufacture of 6 lakh AK203 assault rifles at a new factory in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi. The Kalashnikovs will replace the INSAS rifles as the standard-issue for Indian troops.
Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections scheduled for next year, Amethi is set to emerge as a hub for the manufacturing of AK203 assault rifles. In limbo for years, looks like the Indo-Russian joint gig to build ~7 lakh Kalashnikov AK-203 assault rifles in UP’s Amethi could soon get MoD green signal ahead of President Putin’s visit to India. Upcoming UP polls an obvious catalyst too. My report: pic.twitter.com/gp0BG3QAYZ
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Tuesday cleared the deal between Russia and India to manufacture 6 lakh AK203 assault rifles at a new factory in Amethi. A final decision in this regard was taken by the Defence Acquisition Council ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to India.
