Barathi and her husband, Velavan, lived in Kallakurichi in Tamil Nadu. The couple has three children -- Vigneshwaran (12), Akhilan (7) and 11-month-old Devesh. The family had been struggling financially after their eldest son was diagnosed with a kidney problem.
