Two held for circulating counterfeit notes in Ambur

Two arrested for circulating fake ₹100 notes in Ambur; suspects identified as childhood friends from the area.
Two persons were arrested by Ambur police on Sunday for circulating counterfeit currencies of ₹100 denominations in Ambur and surrounding areas of Tirupattur.
Police said that the arrested persons were identified as Mohammed Imran, 30, and Mohammed Tharif, 29. They are natives of Ambur town and were childhood friends in the area. Initial inquiry revealed that N. Shabana Begam, 62, a resident in Ambur town, pledged her gold jewellery in a in the town many months ago. She decided to get back her jewellery by paying the remaining dues of ₹40,000.
When she fell short of ₹10,000 for jewellry payment, her son Mohammed Amir, 24, borrowed the amount from friends Imran and Tharif, who are now suspects. However, upon depositing ₹40,000 at the bank, cashier V. Muthulakshmi discovered 84 counterfeit ₹100 notes among the money.
Based on a complaint by bank officials, police investigated and found the duo was responsible for circulating counterfeit notes in the region. A case was registered. They were lodged at sub-jail in Tirupattur town.
Police said the duo appeared to be operating on a small scale. The suspects have some previous criminal cases against them. A probe is under way.
