President Trump says the U.S. may be close to announcing new tariff agreements as his administration faces pressure to strike deals with major trade partners before a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs ends on July 9.
Since announcing a bevy of tariffs from the Rose Garden in early April, President Trump and his team have been in negotiation mode, meeting with foreign leaders from Canada, Italy, India, Japan and other key U.S. trading partners. The administration has rolled out tariffs in fits and starts over the last few months, creating ongoing market volatility and sparking fears of a U.S. recession.
Mr. Trump on Sunday told reporters on Air Force One that "there very well could be deals this week." While testifying in front of the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent repeated the same timeline, telling Congress that trade deals could be announced as soon as this week. Neither Mr. Trump nor Bessent provided further details.

Another winter storm may be headed toward the East Coast of the United States this weekend, on the heels of a powerful and deadly system that blanketed huge swaths of the country in snow and ice. The effects of that original storm have lingered for many areas in its path, and will likely remain as repeated bouts of Arctic air plunge downward from Canada and drive temperatures below freezing. But Democrats say they won't allow the package to move forward without reforms to immigration enforcement. Caitlin Huey-Burns contributed to this report.
