Tharoor said he had informed the party in advance and would raise his concerns directly with the leadership during the session. This was the second senior-level Congress meeting he has missed in recent days.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor did not attend a party meeting held at former Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s residence on Tuesday, citing prior travel commitments as he was returning from Dubai ahead of the Budget session of Parliament.
Senior party leaders present at the meeting included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and leaders such as P Chidambaram, Jairam Ramesh, Pramod Tiwari and Manish Tiwari.
This was the second senior-level Congress meeting Tharoor has missed in the past four days. Last week, he was absent from a meeting convened to discuss the party’s strategy for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. Tharoor is the Congress Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram, a seat he has held since 2009.
Speaking to mediapersons, Tharoor said he had informed the party in advance about his inability to attend the meeting. “Whatever issues I have to raise, I will convey them directly to the party leadership. There is no doubt that I will get that opportunity, especially since everyone will be together during the Parliament session,” he said.
Explaining his absence, Tharoor said the invitation for the meeting came only a day or two earlier, by which time his travel plans had already been finalised. “With Parliament in session, I had booked my ticket directly from Dubai to Delhi,” he said, adding that he was returning late in the evening.
Sources in the party also said Tharoor was travelling back from Dubai and had informed the leadership about his absence.
