Visakhapatnam Port unions protest privatization of Golden Jubilee Hospital, demand cancellation of re-tender for PPP upgrade.
The representatives of all party trade unions of Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) on Monday staged a protest at the Port Administrative Office Building (AOB), demanding cancellation of the ‘re-tender’ which, they alleged, was opened by the port authorities on Monday for upgradation of the Port Golden Jubilee Hospital (GJH).
They demanded the withdrawal of the plan to upgrade the hospital in PPP mode. They warned that the agitation would be intensified, if the VPA went ahead with its decision on allowing private participation.
Deploring the decision of the port management to ‘privatise’ the GJH, CITU United Port & Dock Workers Union general secretary K. Satyanarayana said the hospital, which was constructed four decades ago, has been catering to the health needs of thousands of workers. On September 24, 2024, the port invited tenders for the PPP mode project. It was cancelled after protests, but the VPA invited tender again on March 3, 2025, and the bids were opened on Monday.
Saying that the port management has reserve funds of crores of rupees and several acres of land, they opined that there was no need to invite private participation for the development of the hospital.
