Toys without ISI mark worth Rs 70 lakh seized in Bhopal

Officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a raid at a mall in Bhopal and seized toys without the ISI mark worth Rs 70 lakh on Thursday.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a raid at a private mall in Bhopal on Thursday and seized toys without ISI mark worth Rs 70 lakh. The raid was carried out under the supervision of BIS senior scientist Raman Trivedi and Chinese toys without ISI mark were seized from the mall, Amar Ujala reported.

Acting on specific information, a joint operation was carried out by the BIS sleuths and police officials and toys in large quantities were seized from the mall. The investigative team has now launched a probe to find out the countries from where these toys were imported and for how long this business has been going on, the reports said.

Trivedi was quoted by Amar Ujala as saying that the sale of toys without an ISI mark is strictly prohibited in the country.

"Despite restrictions, the sale of toys without an ISI mark has been going on in the market and we have been receiving a lot of complaints about the sale of such illegal toys. We have initiated a crackdown and a team of BIS officers sealed the store and seized Chinese toys," he said.

He further added, "As per the guidelines of the government of India, toys without an ISI mark are harmful for children. The shopkeepers put the health of children at stake for profit and import these toys at a cheaper rate only to sell them at higher prices."

Notably, BIS officials are carrying out a campaign to seize illegal toys and a 13-member team has been carrying out raids in Bhopal.
