
Tourists cheated near Konark Sun Temple with fake cashew packets, 2 detained

The latest incident involved a group of around 15 tourists from Maharashtra who had come to Konark as part of a pilgrimage tour.
A case of tourist fraud has surfaced near the iconic Konark Sun Temple in Odisha, where vendors allegedly cheated visitors by selling fake cashew packets filled with puffed grains (ramdana) and low-quality cashews instead of premium nuts. Police have detained two people in connection with the matter.
According to information, the scam has been running in the Konark area for a considerable time, targeting tourists visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The latest incident involved a group of around 15 tourists from Maharashtra who had come to Konark as part of a pilgrimage tour.
The tourists said they were approached by vendors riding bicycles and motorcycles near the tourist zone. The sellers reportedly claimed that the cashews were locally sourced and of superior quality. Decorative packets were shown to the visitors, and the vendors quoted a price of Rs 600 per kilogram.
The victims alleged that the packets were designed to appear genuine.
When partially opened, the top layer contained shiny, good-quality cashews, which convinced the tourists to buy them.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.
