Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao emphasizes need for tough measures to restore peace in Dakshina Kannada amid communal tensions.
If tough measures are not taken it will be difficult to restore peace in Dakshina Kannnada, said Health and Family Welfare and Dakshina Kannada in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao in Mangaluru on Friday.
Speaking at the launch of Special Action Force (SAF) he said: “There is criticism over formation of SAF. It should be kept aside as 95% of people will agree with this initiative (of forming SAF).”
Mr. Rao said communal hatredness is the only black spot that is affecting growth of Dakshina Kannada, which is ahead in terms of literacy and other growth indicators, compared to other districts. Lot of hate speeches, which gets mixed with politics, are being made. Wrongdoers are continuing with their illegal activities under the protection of communities.
While making it clear that the government will not protect anybody who does hate speech and spreads communal hatred, Mr. Rao said: “We are not indulging in politics. Action will be taken against all wrong doers. Police have to be allowed to take action dispassionately. There is no question of government supporting any group.” He also asked SAF personnel to work cautiously in the region as a small crime does gets projected disproportionately. “But if you work with good intention, then you need not worry,” he said.
Emphasising on the commitment of government in restoring harmony and peace in Dakshina Kannada and putting the district on the growth map, the Minister said shortly a peace committee meeting will be held in Mangaluru
Director General and Inspector General of Police M.A. Saleem said the SAF will work in coordination with local police in tackling hate speeches and other communal crime. The police force will be tough against anti-social elements, he said.
