TUDA plans to develop Tirupati's Avilala tank, mirroring Hyderabad's Tank Bund, enhancing conservation and recreational facilities.
Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) chairman C. Divakar Reddy said that efforts are on to protect, preserve, and develop the Avilala tank in Tirupati on the lines of Hyderabad’s Tank Bund.
The tank abutting the Chennai – Anantapuram national highway, spread over an extent of 187.27 acres, has to be protected in tune with the Supreme Court verdict as well as the guidelines of National Green Tribunal (NGT). It may be recalled that the tank was filled with earth and levelled in 1992 for the Congress party’s plenary session held in Tirupati and thus remained entangled in a legal mess for several years.
Mr. Reddy visited the tank on Thursday (February 05, 2026) along with TUDA vice-chairman R. Govinda Rao, who is also the in-charge Joint Collector, for a study on tank’s development and beautification.
“In tune with Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s vision to develop Tirupati as a “City of Lakes and Tanks”, we are taking up the prestigious task to beautify Avilala Cheruvu (tank) on the lines of Hyderabad’s Tank Bund”, Mr. Divakar Reddy said.
The plans under way include a mega water sports park to match international standards, a 2.5 km-long and 14 metre-wide bund, landscaping, tree plantation, formation of walking tracks, cycling and jogging tracks, multiple play areas for children and installation of statues of historical and popular personalities.
On the conservation and restoration front, the TUDA authorities have also prepared estimates for excavation of the 5 km-long supply channel from Avilala tank to Peruru tank, which were reportedly ‘existing but defunct’.
