“Straw” is the most popular movie on Netflix right now, according to the platform’s public ranking system.
The melodramatic Tyler Perry-directed thriller stars Taraji P. Henson as a struggling, overworked single mother who, after experiencing a devastatingly bad day, snaps when she reaches her final straw. That fallout comes after getting wrapped up in two murders and a mistaken bank robbery, all while fighting to get back to her daughter.
Despite Henson’s strong leading performance, critics said the film suffers from the same issues that plague many Perry-written projects. Still, it earned a huge reaction from audiences, which would explain its high Netflix ranking.
In addition to Henson, “Straw” also stars Teyana Taylor, Sherri Shepherd, Glynn Turman, Rockmond Dunbar and Sinbad. The movie premiered on Netflix on June 6.
