Third Covid wave hits children in Delhi, hospitalisation rates go up

The number of children requiring hospital beds due to the Covid infection is on the rise in Delhi. The infection is spreading at a fast rate among children and doctors have warned parents to watch out for warning signs.
The Covid-19 infection is spreading at a tremendous rate among children, leaving the parents and medical professionals worried. Doctors across the country, including Delhi, have reported an increasing number of Covid infections among children with many showing symptoms such as fever, chills, respiratory ailments and diarrhea.
The situation in the national capital remains grim as the number of children requiring hospital beds due to Covid-19 infections is on the rise. The doctors and medics have flagged concerns about the rise in hospitalisation among Covid infected children and have warned parents not to ignore any symptoms.
A report published in the Times of India (TOI) revealed that the number of children needing hospital beds due to Covid-19 infection is on the rise in Delhi. However, only a small chunk of children need hospitalisation and those infected with severe co-morbidities are at a higher risk.
According to a report by the Delhi government, seven children who succumbed to the virus between January 9 to January 12, six of them had severe co-morbidities.
Medical Director of Loy Nayak Hospital, Dr Suresh Kumar, was quoted by TOI as saying that at present 27 children have been admitted to the hospital for medical treatment in the past three weeks. He said that of them, three children who suffer from comorbidities, including birth defects, are on ventilator or oxygen support. At present, 13 children are still in the state-run hospital and the rest have been discharged.
In Rainbow Hospitals, seven children are being treated at present in Covid ward, the report revealed. Dinesh Vashist, Vice President, also emphasised the surge in hospitalisation among kids and said that children are getting admitted due to lethargy, oral intake and co-morbidities.
"In children, Covid symptoms include high grade fever, vomiting, poor oral intake and watery stool. Most of these symptoms subside with symptomatic management at home itself, "reported TOI, quoting Dr Gaurav Thukral, COO, Healthcare.
