Telangana Gig Workers Union celebrates the passage of a landmark bill ensuring social security and recognition for gig workers.

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) on Tuesday welcomed the passage of the Telangana Platform Based Gig Workers (Registration, Social Security and Welfare) Bill, 2026 and describing it as an important step towards ensuring social security and dignity for gig and platform workers.

TGPWU president Shaik Salauddin expressed appreciation to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Labour Minister Vivek Venkataswamy for making the bill a reality.

According to the TGPWU, the Bill provides statutory recognition to platform-based gig workers and proposes the creation of a tripartite welfare board comprising representatives of the government, workers, and aggregators. It also mandates registration of workers with a unique identification system and requires aggregators to register within a stipulated period.

The legislation, he said, seeks the establishment of a social security fund driven by contributions from aggregators, government grants, and corporate social responsibility funds. A transaction-based welfare fee on platforms has also been proposed, without placing any burden on workers.

Calling the development a ‘landmark moment’, Mr. Salauddin said the Bill recognises the contribution of gig workers to the economy and addresses long-standing concerns regarding the absence of basic protections.
