Teenage girl cooks up kidnap story but fails to hoodwink Belthangady police

Teenage girl fabricates kidnap story in Karnataka; police confirm hoax and plan counselling as she is a minor.

The alleged attempt to kidnap a teenage college-going girl on February 9 has turned out to be a hoax as the girl reportedly inflicted injuries on herself, Belthangady police stated on February 10.

The girl is a first PU student in a government PU college in Belthangady taluk. She claimed that she was going to her college on a two-wheeler on February 9 when three men in a multi-utility vehicle, who were wearing masks, tried to pull her inside their vehicle.

When questioned by the police, the girl admitted to making false statements. Since she is a minor, police would arrange counselling through a child development planning officer.

According to a police statement: “After careful examination of CCTV camera footage in the area where the incident had reportedly happened, no movement of a multi-utility vehicle, as alleged by the girl, was recorded. The medical examination revealed that the wounds on the hands of the girl were self-inflicted.”

Meanwhile, police would take appropriate legal action against persons who allowed the minor girl to ride a two-wheeler, Belthangady police said.

On February 9, had alleged that three men waylaid her two-wheeler and attempted to drag her into their vehicle. When she resisted, the men assaulted her with a knife. When a passer-by rushed to her rescue, the men fled from the spot, the girl had told the police.
