Taranjit Singh Sandhu sworn in as Delhi L-G, pledges to transform the city into a global capital through collaboration.
Former diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu said he will work with all stakeholders to address the city’s challenges and help transform it into a global capital after being sworn in as the 23rd Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) of the National Capital Territory of Delhi on Wednesday.
Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Sandhu at Lok Niwas. The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Ministers, and other dignitaries.
Calling Delhi his “karmabhoomi (workplace)”, Mr. Sandhu said he would focus on turning challenges into opportunities for the city’s development. “Delhi has several stakeholders, and Delhi has also been my karmabhoomi. I have studied and worked here. PM [Narendra] Modi has a vision for India, and Delhi is the Capital. The elected government and all the stakeholders have a responsibility to find solutions to the various problems,” he said.
Mr. Sandhu said he would strive to take the city to its rightful place as a global capital. “I shall work with the Government of India, Government of NCT of Delhi, our neighbouring States and the people of Delhi to address the issues that the national capital faces and strive to take the city to its deserving place as a global capital,” read a post on X from the official handle of the Lieutenant-Governor.
A 1988-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Mr. Sandhu served as India’s Ambassador to the United States from February 2020 to January 2024. The 63-year-old former diplomat also served at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations from July 2005 to February 2009. He contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Amritsar in Punjab on a BJP ticket but was unsuccessful.
Welcoming him, Ms. Gupta said his experience would help accelerate the city’s development. “You have come here to take Delhi forward at an even faster pace. We have full confidence that your presence will further accelerate Delhi’s progress. Under your guidance, the Delhi government will work in accordance with the directions,” she said.
