Rescue operations are underway for the fifth straight day in a quarry in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli to recover the body of the sixth worker trapped inside. Among the 6 who were trapped, 2 have been rescued and the bodies of 3 others have been recovered.
Rescue teams are continuing search operations for the fifth day to find the missing sixth person stuck inside a quarry in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli. Officials in the area said that a controlled explosion is being attempted to find the body of the sixth person, P Rajendran, who is said to be trapped under nearly 100 tonnes of heavy rocks.
The search operations have been difficult due to the continuous landslides in the region. A similar explosion was carried out to find the body of the fifth person, M Selvakumar.
Initially, six men were trapped when a huge boulder fell on top of them in the 300-foot deep quarry. Two men, Murugan and Vijay, were rescued on May 15.
The two men who were rescued, after being treated in the hospital for their injuries, have joined the rescue operations to recover the body of the sixth man.
As of now, only 2 people have been rescued alive, while the search team was only able to pull out the bodies of three others. A search is underway to rescue one more person stuck inside.
Meanwhile, the District Mines Department, Assistant Director, Vinoth, was suspended on Thursday as per the state government's direction.
Several lapses have been discovered in regard to the operation of the quarry. The quarry owners had been mining the region for the last one year illegally, without a permit. The last permit had expired in April. The officials in charge have been questioned regarding their failure to monitor this.
