Sofia Qureshi, one of the two women Army officers who briefed the media about Operation Sindoor on Wednesday, is the daughter-in-law of Belagavi. She is married to Colonel Tajuddin Bagewadi, a native of Konnur village in Gokak taluk of the district.
Colonel Sofia is a native of Vadodara (Baroda) in Gujarat district and presently serving in the Jammu region and her husband Tajuddin Bagewadi is serving in the Indian Army in the Jhansi region. They met while serving in Jhansi and subsequently, got married in 2015 in Vadodara (Baroda).
Speaking to media persons at his home in Konnur village on Thursday, where the name plate “Major Tajuddin Bagewadi, Indian Army” welcomes visitors, Sofia’s father-in-law Ghouse Sab Bagewadi said that it is a matter of great pride for him and also for Konnur as she was the daughter-in-law of the village.
Mr. Ghouse Sab Bagewadi said that while they keep visiting the village for family functions and festivals, this year they could not come because they could not get leave.
Giving details of where all the couple have served, including in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and other places, Mr. Bagewadi said that he has asked them to come for Bakrid without fail this time. Mr. Tajuddin Bagewadi is one of the three sons of the elderly Bagewadi.
“In fact, I was not aware of the development. After my friends and relatives started congratulating me, I called my elder son who serves in the Fire Brigade. He told me what my daughter-in-law has done. It felt like I won a lottery. Subsequently, there were many calls and now, people have been coming with garlands to greet me,” Mr. Ghouse Sab Bagewadi said.
