
Six killed in explosion at fireworks unit near Sattur; T.N. CM Stalin announces solatium of ₹4 lakh

Five of the deceased have been identified as S. Kamaraj, 45, R. Kannan, 54, S. Sivakumar, 56, R. Nagaraj, 37, and G. Velmurugan, 54. The identity of one of the deceased is yet to be ascertained. All six bodies have been taken to Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination.
Another worker, S. Muhammad Sudeen, 21, suffered a fracture in one of the legs and has been rushed to Madurai for treatment.
The police suspect that the friction while weighing chemicals in the ingredient room may have triggered the explosion that razed three rooms of the same building. All the six workers, who were trapped under the debris, were killed on the spot. Fire and Rescue Services personnel used earthmovers to retrieve the bodies.
A team of police officials, led by Madurai Superintendent of Police, B. K. Arvind, who were at the spot, said the workers were handling chemicals to make fancy crackers.
Officials from Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation have collected samples from the accident site. A case has been registered by the Vachchakarapatti police..
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K Stalin announced a solatium of ₹4 lakh each to the families of those killed in the explosion. The injured person will be given ₹1 lakh.
